Blue Pearl Bay
Blue Pearl Bay, located on the western side of Hayman Island in the
Whitsunday Islands is one of those locations that just begs to be dived! It is
quite a deep anchorage outside the reef protection markers and the public
mooring bouys, with depths dropping rapidly from about 18m to 30m. So for most
smaller vessels, anchoring is not an option and a public mooring bouy is the
order of the day.
The anchorage provides suprisingly flat conditions even in strong south
easterly conditions, with the moorings in the southern end of Blue Pearl Bay
offering the best shelter. It also provides some shelter from a north east wind,
but no where near as snug.
The beach at Blue Pearl bay is actually a coral rubble beach with very few
sandy areas. The coral is like small stones that have had their sharp edges worn
away over countless years, leaving a smooth surface and a countless variet of
shapes. Snorkelling straight off the beach or from your boat, there is only a
short distance to the reef edge, where you'll find all manner of fish on your
front door step.
As Blue Pearl Bay drops into deep water, many larger pelaegic species of fish
cruise through here. You'll also regularly see turtles
and occasionaly Manta
Rays and even Humpback
whales INSIDE the anchorage!
